It is believed that the name derives from the river Indus, which flows through modern Pakistan. Its original name, in Sanskrit, is Sindhu (the sea) and the Pakistani province of Sindh derives its name from that. A change that is quite common is many parts of the world led to the initial sibilant "S" being dropped and later replaced by the aspirate "H". So, in Persia, the region became known as Hind and its people Hindus.
