At the conclusion of World War II, the Germans surrendered on May 7, 1945, for two reasons. The first was that they had finally been overrun by Allied armies from both east and west and were unable to maintain a cohesive defense. The second is that Hitler's death had finally released German leadership from the obligation to continue the suicidal struggle: saner leadership recognized the need to surrender.

Since the Germans were still spread out in pockets of resistance, they surrendered to whatever allied force was around.

-Germans in Italy surrendered to the Western Allies

-Germans in Berlin surrendered to the USSR (General Vasily Chuikov) and the Western Allies

-Germans in Northwest Germany, Holland and Denmark surrendered to British Field Marshal Montgomery

-Germans in Bavaria surrendered to American General Jacob L. Devers

-Germans in Central Europe surrendered to the USSR

-Germans in the besieged city of Breslau surrendered to the USSR

-Germans in the islands of the English Channel did not surrender, but Winston Churchill allowed them to leave without harm

The actual unconditional surrender that took place on the morning of May 7th, 1945, was accepted by Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces Dwight D. Eisenhower, British Field Marshal Montgomery, and Russian General Georgi Zhukov.

The Instrument of Surrender was signed at Rheims, France, at 02:41 hours on 7 May 1945. Another Act of Military Surrender was signed, shortly before midnight, on May 8 in the outskirts of Berlin, Germany, at the insistence of the Soviets who considered the Rheims Instrument as a preliminary. The signing ceremony took place in a villa in an eastern suburb of Berlin called Karlshorst, where the German Russian Museum is located today.(Wikipedia)
