What is Basmati Rice and is it worth all that extra cost?

Basmati rice is a long grain rice, but unlike most long grain rice, it does not tend to stick together quite as much. It also has an aroma that is lovely and much more fragrant than most other rices (Jasmine rice is a notable exception). You can get Basmati rice in white or brown varieties. Due to it's average glycemic index, it may be a better choice for diabetics than some other types of rice. Some would say it is essential to making authentic Indian dishes. I think a reasonable replacement would be Jasmine rice; with that said, I'd buy the basmati. The cost difference is really quite small if you buy in bulk from a shop like Sprouts or Whole Foods where you can scoop out of the barrels.

Why does white rice cost less than brown rice to buy?

Here in the Vancouver, B.C. Canada area, white rice is a lot cheaper than brown rice. Also there is a lot more vareity of brands and bag sizes for white rice to choose from whereas with brown, we only have 2 or 3 brand choices and only small quantity bags. You can not buy a bag of brown rice that is more than 3kg here. For example here 8Kg of white rooster thai rice is $15CAD, 10kg of white Kokuho Japanese rice is $20. Whereas 2.5kg of brown Nishiki Japanese rice is $8 and 2.5KG of brown Indian rice is $6. My only guess is that the higher demand for white rice cause it to be more mass produced so that drives the prices down. People like the taste of white rice more and it lasts longer in storage than brown. I'm one of the few people here who prefer brown rice instead for it's health benefits and I think it tastes just as good anyways even though I'm Japanese. So yes all of my friends and family and girlfriend tell me they still like white rice more.

Were should rice be stored?

Rice should be stored in tightly secured containers in cool place. This prevents moisture and insect infestation If you buy rice in bulk, freeze it for three days to kill any weevil or insect eggs. Transfer the contents into tightly secured jars, and store in cool place. Brown rice is very different than the white rice from storage point of view. Brown rice has oils that can quickly become rancid as they are oxidized. Preferably brown rice should be stored in the refrigerator.

How do you avoid eating rice and curry?

Try not to buy the ingredients to make it and also try healthy substitutes like cous cous with seasoned chicken breast or maybe use brown rice which is healthier or a light tasty soup.
