The acronym "SR" stands for Seaman Recruit, the lowest rank in the Navy. It is given to those who first enlist and attend Basic Training (Boot Camp).

In today's modern Navy, for most who graduate BT, they're automatically promoted to Seaman Apprentice or Seaman. These 3 ranks (E-1 through E-3) are the lowest ranks under Non-Commissioned Officers (Petty Officers).

It is different also depending on the career path of the individual - if the person is going into Aviation, it's AR, for Engineering rates (Machinists, etc.,) it's Fireman Recruit (FR).
