Historians have differing opinions on the precise date of the Buddha's birth but it was around the year 500BCE. He was born into a noble family in Lumbini, an area that today lies in the South of Nepal.
Lord Buddha was a Hindu prince born in India. His name was Siddhartha Gowthama. He travelled widely leaving his kingdom and family. He promoted peace and non-violence. As his teachings attracted many, people joined him and spread his message of non violence, later this concept has been called as "Buddhism". Apart from India, this spread to eastern countries like Burma,Thailand,Japan,China and southern country Sri Lanka.
