IN The Bible, death is spoken of as the opposite of life. (Deuteronomy 30:15,19) The same original-language words for "death" or "dying" are applied to humans and animals (Ecclesiastes 3:19 + Ecclesiastes 9:5&10).
The Scriptures show that death in humans and animals follows the loss of the 'spirit' (active force / breath) of life (Hebrew: ru′ach chai‧yim′).Genesis 6:17 (Psalms 146:3+4)
The first mention of death in the Bible is found at Genesis 2:16, 17 in God's command to the first man concerning the eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, violation of which command would result in death. This wasn't supposed to happen. Adam and Eve could have lived forever, but chose to turn away from God, (Genesis 3:19; James 1:14, 15) spreading death, to all men.
The cause of death in humans, is sin. (Romans 5:12; Romans 6:23).
Jesus came to give us the opportunity for everlasting life again (John 3:16)(John 17:3)
