Most shark attacks occur near reefs, between sandbars, and near steep drop-offs, because those places also attract other marine life that the sharks hunt.

Sharks are also attracted to places where humans fish, or where waste was disposed in the water, leading to more attacks in those areas.

Most of the shark attacks on humans occur near the water surface, on swimmers, snorkelers, and surfers - there were 318 attacks between 2000 and 2009 on surface recreationists (people Surfing, rafting, floating, etc), 185 attacks in the same period on swimmers, and only 53 on divers.

The countries with the most shark attacks are the USA, Australia, and South Africa.
