When did smallpox end?
In 1967 the World Health Organization (WHO) started a worldwide campaign to eradicate smallpox. This goal was accomplished in 10 years due in a large part to massive vaccination efforts. The last endemic case of smallpox occurred in Somalia in 1977. On May 8, 1980, the World Health Assembly declared the world free of smallpox.

Who is most at risk with smallpox?
At this time not one person anywhere in the world is at any risk with smallpox as the disease was completely eradicated from the wild in 1980 by vaccinations. There are only two samples of live smallpox virus in the world and they are cryogenically frozen in liquid nitrogen, one is in the US and one is in Russia. Production of smallpox vaccine has also ceased as there is no more need for it.
