Follow the wire from the #1 cylinder to the cap. see link
There should be a mark or a ``1`` on the cap to tell you.
the cap doesn't have a #1 mark on it.
The firing order on a 2.5 Pontiac motor is 1-3-4-2, 1 being in front. The chilton book shows the firing order and the wire placement on the dist cap. #1 is at 10 oclock.
standing on the passengers side of the car and looking at the dist. it is the bottom right. From there you wire the the cap clockwise
should be in a straight line from center of the distributer cap to the #1 cylinder, or pointing at the #1 cylinder
#1 on distributor cap faces to the front ( inline with the middle of the engine ) according to the picture in my Chilton repair manual

if you remove the dist cap there is a small peice with 4 wires on it its held on with two screws on the outside of the dist if you remove the dist cap there is a small peice with 4 wires on it its held on with two screws on the outside of the dist
1-5-3-6-2-4
take out the # 1 spark plug turn the motor to top dead center remove the dist. cap and where ever the rotor is pointing is # 1
