The second-generation 2002-2007 Demio (as it's known in Japan) was the first time it was referred to as the Mazda2. The bulk of manufacturing/assembly took place in Japan, but a European version was assembled at a Ford plant in Valencia Spain until the end of 2006.
The current third-generation 2007-present Mazda2 is primarily manufactured in Hiroshima Japan and Hofu Japan. But Chinese variants are produced in China by Changan Automotive Group
