With reference to the 2003 VW Sharan, 1.8T - The Onboard Computer (ECU) is located just behind the battery towards the right hand side (South African range). So to get to it easily, pull out the battery first and look behind the battery "housing box".
A word of caution though - if your unit is functioning ok then do not unplug it from the harness as it could result in the program being flashed and this can be a nightmare to try and reprogram the unit with all the engine/security/entertainment/etc. protocols......
[If all else fails - pull out this techno junk box and make a conversion with a MR Computer ECU unit or some other lowtech ignition unit which will keep your Sharan running, even if we have a major solar flare discharge!!:-) ].

this totally depends on which sharan you have. Is it a diesel or petrol?
