The cabin air filter is located on the firewall. It is on the inside of the car behind a cover just under the glove box.

1997 VW Jetta GL's dont have them... There is an air intake but no compartment for a filter. Sad but true.

No. The cabin air filter is located on the passengers side in the engine compartment under the cowl, four screws and pull out the cover reveals the filter. This filter cleans the air entering the inside of the car. The engine air filter is located in the engine compartment on the right side and filters air for the engine only. Both are easily changed.
