Virtual memory, when not active, is written to a swapping area. The swapping area is often on a designated area of the system HDD (hard drive), or a separate HDD. If faster storage is available, it may also be on a designated semiconductor storage facility such as an SSD, SD or USB flash drive.

What type of memory is used by most computers when the amount of RAM needed exceeds the RAM available?

That would be virtual memory. Its when your the excess data is stored on your harddrive. A section of your harddrive is reserved for this purpose. Though virtual memory isn't as fast as normal RAM.

Is virtual memory kept in secondary storage?

Yes, virtual memory uses a combination of both primary (RAM) and secondary (disk storage) memory. When the RAM is full, data is temporarily transferred to the hard drive to free up space for new operations, which is why virtual memory is sometimes referred to as "paging file" or "swap file."

What is a memory and its types?

Virtual memory Main article: virtual memory Virtual memory is a system where all physical memory is controlled by the operating system. When a program needs memory, it requests it from the operating system. The operating system then decides what physical location to place the memory in. This offers several advantages. Computer programmers no longer need to worry about where the memory is physically stored or whether the user's computer will have enough memory. It also allows multiple types of memory to be used. For example, some memory can be stored in physical RAM chips while other memory is stored on a hard drive. This drastically increases the amount of memory available to programs. The operating system will place actively used memory in physical RAM, which is much faster than hard disks. When the amount of RAM is not sufficient to run all the current programs, it can result in a situation where the computer spends more time moving memory from RAM to disk and back than it does accomplishing tasks; this is known as thrashing. Virtual memory systems usually include protected memory, but this is not always the case.

What type of data is stored in cache memory?

Cache memory normally stored instructions and data that the processor likely to use frequently.

Do Wii games save onto the Wii?

The save data is stored in the Wii's internal memory, but not the games themselves, except if they are Virtual Console or WiiWare games.

What is the way data is stored in the Windows OS?

Data is stored on the hard disc. The more memory hard disc has the more data can be stored.

What is memory stored on the hard drive?

Perhaps you are referring to Virtual RAM.

What is the name of the file the operating system uses when it moves data from random access memory to virtual memory?

A swap file is the file that an operating system uses when it is moving data. A computer creates this file when it is moving data from random access memory to virtual memory.

What is stored in cache memory?

The data that are frequently used goes in the cache memory...

Why is physical memory better than virtual memory?

Physical memory (in a computer) is 'better' than virtual memory because it is much faster (and speed is usually the main concern in this subject area). Physical memory (or RAM) is where the programs and variables are stored whilst they are working. Virtual memory is only used when the computer runs out of physical memory. Virtual memory is just one or more files saved on a hard disk. Access to the hard disk is much slower than access to the physical memory.
