If you are messing with the timing on these 2.4L "It is "CRITICAL" you get it right the first time. If the crankshaft goes around without the cams moving the valves are bent/broke or the piston's are busted and/or both....I want to stress the use of the 8mm bolts also....But anyway, if you can get to it before it gets out of time...there is a little hole in the cam gears, they both should be down, place a 8mm bolt(exhaust manifold bolts work great) into the holes and into the machined hole that is in the timing chain housing that is BEHIND the cam gears. The crankshaft keyway is going to be up(there is a mark on both the gear and chain housing). IF, you are just replacing the chain and gears, put the 8mm bolts in the cam gears, break loose the cam bolts, then remove the 8mm bolts from cams, turn the crankshaft keyway clockwise to 3 o'clock position(this puts pistons half up and half down, completly away from the valves). Remove the chain tensioner, then the chain, then the gears.(all 3) Then put on the cam gears(use locktite on the cam bolts),rotate the cams until you can insert the 8mm bolts. Then tighten the cam bolts. Then rotate the crankshaft backwards to the 12 0'clock position.Install the chain and tensioner. Then remove the 8mm bolts after the tenioner has been set. IF you are installing camshaft towers on a rebuilt head,, place the crankshaft keyway at 3 o'clock position, then install the cams and towers, then the chain housing, then the gears and 8mm bolts. NOTE:: I know of MANY people that have had first timer mistakes and it cost them dearly. Do your homework throughly..... For photo's.... get a repair manual or go to autozone.com,they have online repair manuals. I wish you good luck and keep the pistons away from the valves!

How do you change a timing belt on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier?

A '98 Cavalier Z24 has a timing chain, not a belt. Currently in the process of changing the water pump, and the timing chain is involved. We are looking at replacing the chain while there because it is a very involved process. You should get a Chilton manual, well worth the money. Will let you know more after completion.
