Most filler plugs on transmissions and transfer cases are or 2 types; both are threaded plugs; with either a hollow square hole in it (traditionally 3/8") and you remove it with a 3/8" ratchet wrench. It's easier if you use a 3" extension for this job. The other is the reverse, it has a 3/8" square sticking out you turn with a wrench.
Some newer vehicles might use a rubber plug you pry out with a tool like a screw driver. while filling stick your finger in there periodically to ck the fill, stop when your finger is wet. Yes, curve your finger down when in the hole; then re-install the plug and go wash your hands.
