Gas, or petroleum as we quaint bumpkins say, was made when rainforests from several million years ago were crushed beneath the tons of sediment which formed over the top of them. Over millions of years, the biochemicals in the trees and animals were squeezed out and the intense pressure formed a mixture of hydrocarbons; cruse oil.
Gas is a hydrocarbon, and only forms in this way. Crude oil is taken from the ground and heated. Gas will only condense at a particular temperature (look up fractional distillation), so can be separated from the mix. The rest is used for tar, jet fuel etc.
The big problem is that gas isn't being made at the moment. It takes millions of years to make gas, so even if we replanted the rainforests, oil will still run out.
