This may be a long answer...here goes: The best way to change the spark pluck is to remove the front plastic then remove the gas tank (CUT THE GAS FLOW OFF!) and look at the head of the engine, you will see 4 large 24(??i think it's 24)mm caps and toward the front of the bike is a dip between 2 of those caps, pull out the spark plug wire and BLAM there it is!! i think you'll need an 18mm socket (thin wall) to get it out!! -my400ex89 "go big or go home"

The most common reason for a Honda 400EX not to fire is the need for a new spark plug. Try replacing the spark plug to see if that fixes the problem.
You need an 18 mm spark plug socket.
The gap for this car is 0.024" to 0.028."
The stock spark plug is the NGK DPR8Z gapped at 24 to 28.
