If the bulb is not blown . it is probaly the multi function switch on the column

If the Third brake light is the only one working , it sounds like the multi function switch...aka turn signal switch...Just had the same problem with my 98 cargo van..
It does not have a reset switch. It does have a relay and a fuse that controll function.
The Ford Taurus is equipped with an Inertial Fuel Shutoff Switch that is triggered when the vehicle is hit from behind or involved in an accident. This switch can inadvertently trigger during aggressive braking or road conditions. On the 1996-1999 Generation 3 Ford Taurus/ Mercury Sable, It is located in the trunk, on the right side behind the carpet paneling in a harness block attached to the upper trunk wall.
First the steering wheel has to come off the take off the multifuncton switch. 1. Remove the steering wheel and upper and lower steering column covers. 2. Disconnect the multi function switch electrical connectors. 3. Remove the screw that holds the switch to the column. 4. Carefully pry up the tab that secures the switch harness container to the bracket on either side. Pull the retainers off the bracket. 5. Take the multi function switch off the steering column. 6. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector. 7. Remove the switch mounting screws and take off the switch. 8. Installation if the reverse of the removal steps.
