If you know how to open your hood all the way to the service position, it will help a lot.It's hard to explain in writing, but there are buttons on the hinges that allow you to open the hood to a full 90 degrees. Then, standing on the drivers side of the car, all the way behind the engine and down about a foot is a black cylinder with ridges around the top edge for grip. this is the filter housing that has to be unscrewed to remove the filter from inside. It is extremely difficult to get loose without purchasing the Mercedes oil filter removal socket from the dealership, but with some determination, can be done with a regular filter wrench. I personally would not bother without it, it's a headache without it, and it's worth the money if you are going to be doing your own oil changes.
