A UK telephone number beginning with 087x (or +44 87x in international format) is a non-geographic "special services" number. Charges from a BT landline can be up to 10p/minute; charges from mobile phones can be up to 50p/minute.

Calls from outside the UK may fail to connect, or may bill at rates substantially higher than rates for calling an ordinary geographic landline number in the UK.

UK area code 0871 (or +44 871 from outside the UK) is for special services - typical business enquiry lines, information lines or chat services.

The charge to call an 0871 number is usually no more than 10p per minute from a BT landline, but calls from mobile phones and other operators may cost considerably more.

Callers from outside the UK may find that 0871 numbers are not accessible or charged at a higher rate.

A UK telephone number beginning 0870 (or +44 870 in international format) is a non-geographic "special rate" number. From a landline, the charge may be up to 8p per minute; from a mobile, the charge may be up to 42p per minute. These numbers may or may not be reachable from outside the UK; call charges may be significantly higher than for calls to a regular landline in the UK.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

There is no telephone country code 087, because country codes never begin with zero.

+87 is an incomplete country code; you need one more digit. +870 is Inmarsat satellite phones, primarily for ship-to-shore calls. +871 through +874 were previously also used for Inmarsat, but have been discontinued. +875, +876, and +877 are reserved for other maritime mobile services. +878 is used for universal personal numbers, a sort of global "follow-me" number. +879 is reserved for some future non-commercial purpose.

UK telephone area code 0845 is used for "special-rate" numbers. The cost to call an 0845 number is higher than an ordinary landline number but less than a "premium-rate" number. From a BT landline, charges to call 0845 numbers are around 5p/minute. From other landlines, the charge may be up to about 20p/minute, and from a mobile the charge may be up to about 41p/minute. Most telephone companies do not include 0845 calls in "inclusive" bundles. The cost to call a UK 0845 (or +44 845) number from outside the UK will likely be substantially higher than the cost to call a regular landline number (beginning with +44 1 or +44 2).
