Specifically, the mountains are called Appennini in Italian. They extend for about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) from the north to the south of peninsular Italy. Scholars cluster the mountain range into the northern, central and southern Apennines. Each of the three geographical clusters also have regional identifications, such as Appennino ligure ("Ligurian Apennines") in the north, Appennino abruzzese ("Abruzzi Apennines") in the center, and Appennino calabro ("Calabrian Apennines") in the south.
