BIOS - the Basic Input Output System of a computer, resides inside the computer's main enclosure on a small programmable chip on the "motherboard" (the central board to which all other computing components are attached). It usually is a black, rectangular chip, known as an EEPROM chip, which is, in effect "read-only" memory, but can be programmed with newer BIOS programming code by removing the BIOS chip and using special-purpose tools.

The BIOS code often is referred to as the computer's "bootstrap code," due to the fact that, in order for the computer to start up (boot), the BIOS chip must execute its own programming code to recognize all related computer peripherals and begin loading the operating system. Some typical BIOS designations/brands, which can be seen at boot-time (and often are stamped on the BIOS chip), are Phoenix BIOS, AMI BIOS and Award BIOS.

Why BIOS is being updated?

The basic input/output system (BIOS) on a computer is a simple yet important program on a personal computer (PC) that helps the computer properly boot and run an operating system (OS) during startup. BIOS drivers are typically used in reference to the program itself, and how the program runs and interacts with other devices on the computer. The BIOS drivers on a computer are saved on a small battery located on the motherboard and allow for the proper initialization and startup of a computer when powered on.
