front of engine passenger side, has gas line in and out
I have a '79 304 and the fuel pump (mechanical) is located on the right side of the engine or the left side if your looking from the grill into the block. Follow the fuel line from your carburetor.

depending on year model and condition stock or modified on the side of the engine follow your fuel lines down from the carb or aftermarket injection system
make sure the fuel pump was put in the proper direction. Believe it or not its very easy to put it in the wrong way ... hook up all your hoses and linkage and try putting some gas in the lines manually to get the flow going
If you can get it to start with starting fluid, then you're getting spark and air. Check your carb to make sure that the jets are working correctly and you're getting fuel. Is your fuel pump intank or on the side of the block? If you haven't replaced the fuel line from the pump to the carb, I'd suggest you do so.
if it is a 258 six cylinder go to passenger side of motor and it should be bolted to the side of the engine block just below the distributor follow the fuel line to the carburetor to make sure [Actually, I have an 84 with a 258 and mine is located to the right of my distributor... my oil filter is below my distributor; but, as was said above, go to your carb. and follow the fuel line when in doubt.]
