As you look at the engine from the front of the car, the thermostat is inside a housing located on the front of the engine on the left side. There is a large hose and a small hose that come off of the housing and two bolts that hold it to the engine. You must replace the entire housing and it costs about $45, but it's a simple job.
It is impossible to change the thermosate. The thermostate is built inside its housing. Therefore one would need to change the entire coolant thermostate housing. The major problem with this obsoutle vehicle is that this part can not be found. The last resort is to check out your local junkyard and you should tons of Lanos. Yank one from there. I have remove two housing so far and as soon as they are installed they crack. If any one come across where they can be puschased brandnew....please drop me a line. at nomi4hire@yahoo.com I have one sitting in my driveway and it needs a housing. Nomi www.partsgeek.com carries the housing
Start with replacing the thermostat, it may be stuck open.

You can replace the thermostat on a C 15 Caterpillar diesel engine by removing the water hose. Next, remove the thermostat housing bolts. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
Be sure it is not low on coolant. It may also be a bad thermostat.
