Under the hood, on the firewall, drivers side there should be a vin tag riveted on.
The body plate with the vin # is found on the fire wall, passenger side under the hood.

The original VIN is located on a tag on the right front passenger floor right inside the door. It's not uncommon for the tag to be missing. Also, some States used the engine number as the VIN.
1940 vehicles did not have a VIN. They did however have a build plate attached to the vehicle somewhere. The location varies with manufacture.
