The brake fluid reservoir would be near the firewall , on the drivers side of
the engine compartment ( it should be a white / semi clear plastic with a
" max " marking on the side

On a 2001 Ford Taurus : You add brake fluid to the brake fluid reservoir , located in the engine compartment , on the drivers side of the engine compartment near the firewall * the firewall is the metal wall that divides the engine compartment from the passenger compartment *
If you mean the red " BRAKE " light in your dash is on , that means that the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder located in your engine compartment ( on a Ford Taurus ) is LOW ( or that the parking brake is on )
