There is no "one" check engine sensor on vehicles dating as far back as 1977. Multiple sensors are located throughout the vehicle.. I.E. exhaust, coolant, fuel pressure, air flow, oil acid, system voltage etc. If any one or multiple sensors detects an out of parameter configuration, that sensor will notify the vehicle control computer and a cod is sent. That code is read by the computer and the "check engine" light comes on. The error code can then be read and the problem diagnosed for repairs.
