I;m not sure what you mean my 'control unit', but the trailer wiring connects into a connector behind the trim on the driver's side rear panel (where the jack is and the storage net for the head rests).

How much weight can you tow with a 2006 5.3 liter 4x4 long bed silverado with a 2 in. bumper hitch?

The amount you can tow will depend on the hitch. You probably have a Class III hitch since it has a 2" receiver. The hitch manufacturer will include a rating on the hitch. Most Class III hitches are rated for towing 5000 pounds. They also are rated for putting 500 pounds of downward pressure on the trailer tongue. If you want greater towing capacity, you can add a weight distribution system to the hitch and it will increase you towing capacity by at least 50%. Check the documentation with your hitch to determine the exact towing capacity of your hitch.

What is the difference between standard towing capacity and maximum towing capacity?

Took me a long time to figure this one out too. "Standard" towing capacity is the maximum weight that can be towed with the factory supplied hitch. "Maximum" towing capacity is the absolute maximum weight that the vehicle can tow with an after market hitch made for heavy hauling, such as a 5th wheel.

Meaning of hitch?

A vehicle hitch is a mount on the rear of a vehicle where a trailer can be connected. When a trailer is hooked to a vehicle to be towed it is said to be "hitched" to the towing vehicle.
