Faulty coolant temp sensor can cause the vehicle to run poorly, if run at all. The guage on the dash uses the ONE wire sensor... This is located in the block near the drivers side. Eric First check to see if you have coolant in the radiator. If there is no coolant you will not get any reading from the temperature sensor. If there is coolant then change the temperature sensor.

P0117 will set if the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) reads over 248F when the engine has been running for 10 seconds. replace your coolant temp sensor. the sensor is located in the drivers side of the cylinder head, just below the valve cover line, under the coolant hose.
sure you need to you can do it fast but you will need to add coolant and myu advice is to when you need to replace the thermostat its the time to replace the coolant
The sensor is threaded into the coolant passage in the back of the cylinder head.
