1988 or 1998? either way it is locate on the thermostat housing. on the 1998 model that is at the front of the engine on the left side (as you look at it) on the top some models have one some have two.
The 2003 Mazda engine coolant temperature sensor is located on the front of the engine, above the thermostat housing. The sensor will have to wires leading to it.
At the back of the engine on the coolant outlet that goes to the heater hoses on the firewall.
There is a coolant temperature sensor and a temperature gauge sensor. the coolant sensor is located on driver side of the cylinder head. screws right into it, and the temperature gauge sensor is on the front side of the cylinder head right under the distributor. hope this helps

The coolant temperature sensor should be located near the upper coolant hose where it enters the engine block, just a few inches nearer to the windshield. It is usually a gold color.

The Air Temperature sensor is in the same unit as the Air Flow Meter on top of the stock air box. The coolant temp sensor is mounted on the coolant outlet on the back of the engine, center, just above the transmission.
