The area is a small German area along the border of France. It is the smallest of the German states. Also known as the Saarland, it was a protectorate after World War 1 and occupied for 15 years by other countries (Great Britain, Ireland and France) under the League of Nations Mandate until 1935 and issued stamps during that time.
