Where is the location of the EGR valve on a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer V*
The 2002 Mercury Mountaineer EGR valve can be found in the engine compartment, on the firewall. The EGR valve will be labeled as such.

Code P401 means:Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve insufficient flow detected
some 1997 mountaineers didn't come with the dpfe sensor, you will have to look at the egr positioning sensor which is right on top of the egr valve itself . hope that helps
In my Experience the egr value is located on top of the intake near the tpi unit.

try changing the d.p.f.e. cost about $35,i just replaced one on a 2003 mercury mountaineer.
