For a 2005 Toyota 4runner SR5 (6 cyl; 4L) engine, you can find the engine number on the passenger side of the engine block toward the rear and bottom. The best way to view the embossed (engraved) number on the engine block is through the front passenger wheel well.
1. Turn your steering wheel hard left.
2. Remove the upper right snap of the rubbery flap that separates the wheel well from the engine compartment. You can do this by reaching behind the flap and pushing together the plastic snap protruders that hold the snap in. Then push the snap out (toward you).
3. You will see a black metal rectangular identification plate attached to the engine block. It is about 2 inches long (vertical) by 1/2 inch wide (horizontal). The VIN number is engraved on this plate, so don't bother reading it.
4. Next to the black plate (toward the rear / to the left), you will see the engine number embossed (engraved but raised up) directly into the engine block. Most 4.0L 6 cylinder engines begin with "1GR" followed by several numbers.
5. In order to read the engine number, it helps to spray it with water (from the side or above through the hood) using a sport bottle. Then, use a flashlight looking through the wheel well directly at the engine number. I had to shove my head around the wheel to get closer, but my vision isn't that good.
