The power transfer unit has a fill plug on the pass side of it.The power transfer unit has a fill plug on the pass side of it.
Mine had a small rubber plug on the outside, lower edge of the unit.
cobra outboard drive unit drain plug inner threads fell in unit
You unscrew the top plug on the lower unit and carefully unscrew the drain plug on the bottom and quickly put the nozzle end of the oil container in it and keep squeezing till the oil just starts to come out of the top hole. This runs any water and/or air out and guarantees that the gearbox is lubed properly.
If it's not in the differential cover then it's in the side of the unit, probably a 3/8 drive square plug.
The Explorer has the 5R55W transmission and has a unique system for the drain plug/fill meter. The drain plug unscrews with a hex nut (size?) in the traditional counterclockwise direction. To fill the transmission, some early models have a fill plug on the back of the case near the extension housing, later models do not. There is no dipstick to check fill levels, what you do is re-install the drain plug, which is hollow. Use an Allen wrench to remove the "core" of the drain plug and then fill the transmission until oil comes back out of this hole, then re-install the core and you're done. DO NOT fill the transmission with fluid p to the level of the fill plug (this was the reason the fill hole on the case was eliminated) it will overfill and burn up the unit. All 4R44 5R55 series transmissions use MERCON V fluid.
1 qt, just filled mine
It is a 2 stroke so it is in the gas and the lower unit has gear lube in it which can be checked by removing the upper plug on the side of the unit.
Remove the fill plug from the 2001 Explorer differential. Remove the cover from the head to allow the fluid to drain. put the cover back on with a new gasket, then fill the unit up through the fill hole.
IF IT'S a Stander shift it's under the truck on the driver side of the trans. if an auto you fill it through the dip stick where you check the fluid level. if it's the transfer unit on the end of the big case there will be two big plug bolts take out the top one to fill.
Changing the gear oil in a 4 stroke outboard, is the same proceedure as with the 2 stroke. Remove the drain plug, at bottom of gearcase, remove vent plug at top of gearcase and let drain. Fill from bottom, (drain plug hole), until lube runs out of top, (vent plug hole). While blocking off drain plug hole, to keep oil from draining, replace vent plug. Make sure that plug gaskets are in place and in serviceable condition. Quickly, replace the drain plug.
