may be difference between column and tower: a tower may have inside space and a column have no inside space column is a solidy form like concrete column during the construction it can be analyse. and i think column requires reflux while tower does not requires reflux. hope that answer the question engrtauseef2008@gmail.com
such towers are basically to separate the liquids having boiling points very closer (fractional distillation) so the length of the tower is useful for separation of condensing material and evaporating material, higher is the length of the tower more purity of a fraction we get.
