The fractionating column has different fraction that are at different temperatures (gets colder as you go up). such towers are basically to separate the liquids having boiling points very closer (fractional distillation) so the length of the tower is useful for separation of condensing material and evaporating material, higher is the length of the tower more purity of a fraction we get.
