Driver side valve cover towards the rear of engine ( closer to firewall )

gas filter is inside the frame , located under the truck just rear of driver seat location

look around the valve covers

In a 2000 Ford Ranger : You could have the 2.5 liter Single Over Head Cam four cylinder The 3.0 liter V6 The 4.0 liter EFI , V6 ( which is an Over Head Valve / pushrod design * and if it was later in that model year you could have the 2.3 liter Dual Over Head Cam four cylinder engine

The 2000 Ford Ranger Owner Guide shows , for the 2.5 liter four cylinder , ( Motorcraft FL-400S ) but fordparts.com shows ( Motorcraft FL-400-S and Motorcraft FL-400-A ) for the 2.5 liter four cylinder in a 2000 Ford Ranger . I don't know what the difference is between the two filters , anybody know ?

it is located on the passenger side of engine. It is mounted on the valve cover and a hose runs up to the black air intake housing, it comes from the air filter to the carburetor

I believe the EGR valve is just to the left of the engine oil dipstick when you look from the drivers side of the engine compartment ( on your 4.0 liter overhead valve / pushrod design VIN " X " engine )
