It is a small black box with an electrical connector and a tube running into it. One of the best kept secrets that cause a lot of trouble. my 1997 Geo Metro acts the same way, I was able to figure out that it was a fuel problem because I sprayed some carburetor cleaner into the air filter compartment and it started, it would keep running as long as I kept spraying. I mentioned it to a mechanic friend and he suggested I replace the fuel pump relay. Based on my own experience with other cars, when its time to replace the relay it is usually time to replace the fuel pump too, because it might be starting to have a problem that causes the relay to overload.

fuel filter is in the gas tank, in the fuel pump assembly. The filter is integral to the unit, and includes the fuel pressure regulator. Cost at dealer is about 60$, you have to drop the gas tank, remove the pump assembly, and pull it out of the top. Many parts dealers wont stock it, and most will sell it only as part of the submersible pump assembly. Its not easy to do as regular maintenance. It uses on of the Dodge quick disconnect attachments. I had a fuel contamination problem, and kept getting my injectors clogged with some red oily substance. Replaced the whole unit at about 130k, after taking it all apart. Dodge parts man suggested that if it was clogged, then wear on the pump was likely, and the only way to get the pump is with a total unit. If your doing this shop around, the part can vary from 220 to 350 $. Good Luck
