I am having the same problem with a 99 Protege. I have changed the alternator and aligned/cleaned the pulleys and the problem persists.
I replaced the alternator, on my 1997 Mazda Protege, seven times before someone figured out why the serpentine belt kept breaking. It was the belt tensioner! It had to be removed and rebuilt. Now it is working like a charm!! And I havn't had to replace the alternator in over 3 months!!!!I have a manual 96 Mazda Protege, with the parking break located behind the shifter. The adjustment bolt is located right next to the parking break on the left side (drivers side) of the parking break handle. you will have to remove the rubber cover around the parking break shaft in order to see the bolt.
The rear disc break pistons on Mazda are not to be pushed in. Instead you turn them in clockwise.
The break pad.
look for a break in the wiring. it might be grounded on something
If the belt squeaks, either the belt is loose or something else is sticking. Your problem is not the belt but something else. The squeak could be a water pump about to break. Since your typing did not describe just the way it is squeaking, I can not tell exactly what is causing the problem.
The Pulley is slipping forward during pump engagement and tightening the belt to breaking point. Tighten or replace bolts holding power steering pump to the bracket. I have been hearing a pulley that sounded loose or like it was gonna fail and have been waiting on the serpentine belt to break on 1996 Mazda protege. Will I feel that the pulley is slipping?
Yes, and it can break and for sure will wear out the bearings in the alternator.
if you don't know how to do it, hire someone who does. this can be a dangerous procedure, if there is power to the air bag when it is disconnected, it will discharge, it has been know to break unsuspecting necks.
After a break for mourning,yes
front passenger side take the tire off the take the fender shroud off the you will want to take the break calipers off then take the half shaft offf then you will be able to change the alternator easily...it sounds like alot but its not
Yes, of course your Mazda dealer can get you one, but for a ransom (close to $60), and apparently no after market parts house or discount parts store has'em. In addition, the door handle should not have broken in the first place, so it would be nice if the Mazda part was a stronger one, but it isn't, it is the original part (which may break just as well). Not too cool.
It will eventually break causing your engine to "jump time" and could cause more problems that are more costly to repair, it is much easier and less expensive to change a belt than it is to replace one.
