If you crawl under the truck on the driver's side door, looking up at the frame. You'll see the fuel line coming from the tank to the external fuel pump mounted on the frame. Follow the fuel line out of the fuel pump about two feet, and you'll find the fuel filter behind the shield. When I change it I have the new filter in hand. Loosen up the hardware on the clamp holding the fuel filter "not the shield", then remove the clips on each side of the fuel lines PRIOR to removing the fuel lines. Remove the fuel line (on the filter) coming in from the fuel pump first then plug it into the new filter. Take off the last fuel line, and old filter, then slide in the new filter into the clamp, and plug in the fuel line. Make sure the fuel filter is installed correctly just like the old filter, and the fuel lines are fully seated, then put your new clips back on. Tighten up the hardware on the clamp, then check for leaks. Before removing anything from the fuel lines the pressure needs to be relieved. Do so by starting the engine and activating the inertia switch located on the interior firewall above the drivers feet. It's a black retangular plastic switch. I believe you lift up on the plunger. After the filter has been changed, reactivate switch by pressing red button down. On my 1989 the fuel filter is directly in front of the fuel pump, not 2 feet.
