I believe it is mounted to the frame near the tank. It isn't too bad to change if you have a way to get under the car SAFELY. (WARNING: Be SURE you have depressurized the fuel system before you start unhooking the filter. The fuel in the lines of a vehicle with the engine turned off can still be at pressures capable of injecting gasoline under your skin. This is a serious injury which may never heal properly.) Just be glad you don't have an '05 or later, as the GM geniuses moved the fuel filter INTO the fuel tank on later models - making filter replacement so expensive that you might as well replace the fuel pump while you are in there! There is a coarse pre-filter in your tank, but it shouldn't ever need servicing, it is just to keep rocks, trees, and environmental wackos from getting sucked into the fuel pump. Also, FYI, the fuel pump, fuel level sender, and the coarse pre-filter are all one package. You have to drop the tank to replace them, and once all the hoses and such are detached, it is sort of a twist-lock affair. If you don't have the GM service manuals and plan to keep the car, I highly recommend buying them. They are around $130 IIRC and available from Helm (or through the GM web site). Assuming $130 is correct, that amounts to about 10 cents/lb. It is one heck of a set of manuals. If you are having hard/no start and you think the fuel filter is the problem, try it, but you may be looking at a new pump or a new fuel pressure regulator. There is a schrader valve on the fuel rail and it is simple to attach a fuel pressure gauge. Exact desired pressure depends on which engine you have, but somewhere in the general area of 50-60 psi is a hopeful sign. (The correct figure can be found in the manuals, and you will need the correct pressure for it all to work right). Good Luck!
