I highly recommend the book "How to Keep Your Subaru Alive" for the Loyale and other pre-early-1990's soobs. IIRC, the fuel filter is on the rear passenger side, under the car just a little in front of the right rear tire. Look for the fuel line coming from the fuel tank and you should find the filter. I HIGHLY recommend you vice-grip the fuel line as you are changing the filter to avoid getting fuel all over you...or it can be very messy.
Under the car, in front of right rear wheel. The filter is actually under the hood on the driver's side near the hinge.
Not sure what type you have but, I have a DL station wagon and the fuel filter is located under the hood on the drivers side by the strut tower.

First, the 1200 last year was 1987, after that it's the 1500. Just follow the fuel line if it's a 1200.
