Nope, different engines and different transmissions. I do know for a fact that you can replace the fifth gear in a 1984 Rabbit GTI with the fifth gear from a 1985 Golf without even removing the transmission. How do I know this? I use to own a 1984 GTI and read that for better highway fuel economy and such the fifth gear from a 1985 Golf is taller making it so the engine runs at a much lower rpm. At 70 in fifth gear the engine screams at about 3500 to 4000 rpm on the 1984 GTI, with the simple change the rpm drops to about 1500. there is a access hole covered by a disk just behind the left front tire.

Remove fuel accumulator, drain unit. Shake unit, if it has fuel inside it has an internal leak and must be replaced. The engine heatsoak causes fuel to boil, the accumulator maintains pressure to prevent this issue.
