I believe that is in the center stack of the dash , behind and to the left of the radio
As far as I know, there wasn't a separate module for the 4 wheel drive from 1995 to 2000, the 4x4 system was controlled by the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module) This module incorporates the functions of several different modules into one and offers diagnostic codes to locate failures ( see a dealer's service department for diagnosis ) The GEM is located in the centre stack of the dash, remove radio to gain access.
The Ford Explorer was produced from the years 1990 to present. The wiper motor pulse board module in a 1998 Ford Explorer 4.0 L is located on the firewall, behind the engine in the middle.
In a 1998 Ford Explorer : The RAP module ( Remote Anti-theft Personality module ) is used with your anti-theft system and your keyless remotes ( each vehicle with keyless entry has it's own factory code )
On a 1998 Ford Explorer : You can seeone end of the Powertrain Control Module ( PCM ) in the engine compartment . It passes through the firewall , from the engine compartment end you can see where the wiring harness is bolted to it , and most of the PCM is " hidden " behind the glove compartment
Ford has been know to mount the GEM under the dash near or underneath the instrument panel fuse box. That would be a logical place to look. Some times the fuse panel is mounted in the kick panel under the dash just inside the door near the brake pedal. Happy hunting!
I believe that is in the jack storage area in the cargo area , on the drivers side by the liftgate

ignition timing is controlled by the electronic control module or the "brain" on distributorless engines. Reysher
