Volkswagen makes the Transporter T5 van and it went into production in 2003. It is produced in Hanover, Germany. Volkswagen announced their one-millionth produced T5 van in June 2009.

There are five types of Volkswagen transporters each labeled T1-T5 which represent a new generation. The T1 transporters are the oldest generation while the T5 generation are the current set of Transporters being manufactured.
Never, unfortunately. When developing the T5, VW was planning to develop the retro-style Minibus concept for the US, so the T5 wasn't developed for US specs (those "safety standards" to discourage import vehicles). The Microbus got cancelled for financial reasons, and they will be offering a VW re-badged version of the 2008 Dodge Caravan (which they "developed in cooperation"). The Volkswagen Transporter has been around, in one form or another, since the early 1950's. The current Transporter Model (the T5) is not avaialble for sale in the United States, but can be obtained in Mexico.
