The ignition module is located under the distributor cap. It has 2 wiring plugs extending out the back side. Make sure you apply the white grease that comes with the module when installing new one. GM modules will quit when they become old and overheated. When this happens, the vehicle usually dies. Letting it cool down for awhile then restarting will get you on you way.

Since the compression is good I would not expect it to be a burnt valve. It could be timing if the timing chain has excess play. I would also check the ignition module and the engine control module. We had a 1986 Chevy Celebrity that had an ignition problem that cause it to run badly and backfire. The service engine soon light was blinking but not posting a code. We changed the engine control module and it fixed the problem.

Wear gloves to avoid getting acid on your skin. 2, Remove the distributor cap and place it out of the way. If you pull any spark plug wires make note of where they go so they can be put back. 3. Carefully unlatch the electrical plugs and remove them. The latches are old and brittle, be careful not to break them off. Take note of which one goes where to be able to put them back. 4. The ignition module is held in with two screws, remove them and lift off the module. Use fresh dielectric grease on the replacement module. Coat the bottom of the with a generous amount of dielectric grease. This acts as a heat sink and will greatly improve the life of the module. Reverse the procedure to install the replacement ignition module.
