Key codes are located on a metal plate that came with the original keys, on the key themselves, and some bikes on the ignition switch, front, side, or inside (or so I read). I have had no luck finding them. Dealers can not tell you based on the VIN unless it is the dealer you bought it from.
For an 89, if it has no other locks, I suggest getting a used lock, or a complete set of used locks from another bike.
other than that, a locksmith but it'll cost you a bit.

the vehicle identification number is stamped into the left side of the frame
According to the parts man at Yamaha who I talked with today, the number is on the frame on the left side by the footpegs. This was for a Warrior 350, but may work for your model too. For my Yamaha Moto-4 350 - the VIN is located on the frame, adjacent to the (rear side) of the left front tire.
