Negative is black. Positive is red. Follow the heavy black wire. Alternatively, negative is also ground, and a good place is the alternator bracket. Some newer cars have the battery in strange places, such as under the left fendor (Chrysler) or under the rear seat (GM). There will still be a distribution panel in the engine compartment. Again, follow black, and not red.
