It is accessable from underneath the engine. There is a skid plate that protects the lower half of the engine from rocks and debris. There is an access panel in the skid plate. This opens by removing the 10mm bolts and rotating the panel out of the way. You can now see the oil filter up inside. You will need to do this with the vehicle up on ramps to access. Have a towel handy to pack under the oil filter. When you break the seal the oil will pour out of the filter and run everywhere. Another great design by GM having the filter sideways instead of up and down.
According to my 2006 Ascender owners manual the oil capacity with filter is 7 quarts. This is for the 2006 4.2
6 Quarts in the 4200 vortec engine.
