The A/C filter aka cabin filter (which filters out dirt, dust, pollen etc.) is located underneath the glove compartment. You need to remove the plastic cover either by releasing the clips, or by removing screws (depending on your model). There are two types of filters, one with carbon and one without. The addition of active carbon helps filter out odors and pollutants too.
A cheaper alternative to the Mini OEM Filter is made by MicronAir.
